Pathfinder funding annouced to fund a sustainable retrofit for Trinity East
Announced December 20th 2024: Over 100 million of Pathfinder project funding. 2 of 8 projects funded are here at TCD:
1- Trinity East research laboratories
2-Trinity East Research Office:
Trinity College is leading the way in its commitment to sustainability in the Higher Education Sector.
As Junior Minister in the Department of Environment, I ensured measures supporting third level institutions to develop a foundation for sustainable practices.
One such programme, ‘Pathfinder’, tests a range of building retrofit approaches to build evidence and capability in the sector, and to inform decisions as larger scale programmes are rolled out in the future.
It is a highly competitive process but it’s no surprise that it has just been announced that two of the 8 projects funded are here at TCD.
This is a key climate action measure which will support higher education institutions in making progress towards 2030 targets of a 50% improvement in energy efficiency and 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Launched in early 2023 the EEDPP-HE 2023 is the third round of the pathfinder initiative and is designed to provide ongoing support to the HE sector in testing and demonstrating effective energy efficiency and decarbonisation approaches. The programme also aims to build scale and develop a foundation for sustainable practices across institutions.

The expected range of technical measures to be deployed include:
-
Local low-temperature heat pump and new heating system to replace existing storage system.
-
Heat-recovery ventilation system.
-
Building management system and controls
-
Internal dry-lining.
-
Roof replacement including insulation.
-
Solar PV on roofs (ballasted system on flat roof).
-
Window replacement.
-
Battery energy storage system.
-
Heat recovery ventilation.
-
Gross Internal Floor Area (m2): 2,378m2
2-Trinity East Research Office:
Trinity East Research Office project proposes the deep retrofit with Low Temp Air Source Heat Pump of 1,652m2 of blocks which were developed in the 1970s, featuring single block construction and red brick façade, are heated by storage heaters and naturally ventilated. The roofs have reached end of life and require replacement. TCD funding will be used to fit out the spaces as office/write-off and address accessibility issues and will provide template for future retrofit phases. Gross Internal Floor Area (m2): 1,652m2
